The girl adjusting Vic Feather’s tie so expertly is Maureen Dodds. She is rather good at organising men, and played a leading part in building up union membership to a hundred per cent at the tobacco factory in Newcastle upon Tyne where she works as a cigarette packing machine-operator. Maureen, a 22-year-old shop steward for the Tobacco Workers Union, met the Trades Union Congress General Secretary in London on Monday (17-7-72), when it was announced that she was to receive the TUC Award for Yourth at the September Congress in Brighton. Being so good at the job, Maureen, from Dudley, Northumberland, has naturally organized a man for herself – a lboratory technician called Ricky Anderson. She marries him in October.
