MANIAC ROMEO WHO DARED TO LOVE DANGEROUSLY—fails in bid for hand of 19-year-old-beauty, falls on the wrong side of the law

13th March 1980
Lovesick Barry Chick, 19, was so upset when his girlfriend’s father told him to leave his daughter alone that he kidnapped her and drove around with his captive for three days, trying to persuade her to marry him. 19-year-old Collette Hinz was unable to escape or pass any message to the police until a regular road check uncovered the dramatic plot. Collette told police that Chick had a knife when he met her near her home in Handsworth, Birmingham, and forced her into the car. He had removed the inside handles and was determined to win her love by force if necessary. Judge Black gave Chick a six-month suspended sentence at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday 12th march and was fined 75 pounds for unlawfully taking away two motor cars. Afterwards, Collette said; "….now all I want to do is keep him out of my life."
