LONDON’S STREETS OF FEAR—statistics show blacks make the best scapegoats

March 11 1982
Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner Gilbert Kelland announced on Wednesday march 10 that London was in the grip of its worst-ever outbreak of violent crime. For the first time, the Yard has published a racial breakdown of violent incidents. Of the 18,763 offences, 10,399 were carried out by blacks, 4,967 by whites and 704 by mixed gangs. Worst hit was lambeth, which includes Brixton – the scene of last summer’s riots. Next highest were Hackney and Lewisham-Bromley. The Daily Mirror recently followed police in Stoke Newington, London, to a variety of violent incidents, including a theft, a mugging, a fight and a car crash.
