PRETTY NURSES NEED MORE PAY—in bed with hungover Fleet street hacks in need of story to hand in by deadline

May 1974
Thousands of nurses – the angry angels of Britain – went on the march on Monday (13-5-74). They gathered in London for a mass rally in support of their call for more pay. The big march started at the Royal College of Nursing headquarters in Cavendish Square. Then the nurses, chanting slogans and waving banners, marched along Oxford Street to Hyde Park a mile away. Dozens of shoppers, shopgirls and street traders cheered and applauded the pretty faces of protest. More than 3,000 nurses from all over the country and from every kind of hospital helped to spell out the loud and clear message from the rally: "We want more pay."

PICTURED: A big smile – but nurses like third-year student Angela Wetmacott here, are far from happy with their present pay.
