TERRENCE STAMP: Odd man out pulls 1970s vanishing act
in film and in London's cafe society

Terrance Stamp is an icon of British cinema and amongst the international film community for good reason. Known for the extensive media coverage of his romances in the 1960s with film stars Julie Christie, Brigitte Bardot, and supermodel Jean Shrimpton. His and Julie Christie's romance, and their high profiles during London's 'swinging 60s', is referenced in The Kinks' 1967 song, Waterloo Sunset, with the line about "Terry and Julie". He and Jean Shrimpton were one of the most photographed couples of Mod London.

But as the sixties drew to a close the golden touch failed him. Antonioni replaced Stamp at the last minute with David Hemmings as the lead in Blow Up and Shrimpton left him for another man. A devastated Stamp took off for an ashram in India. His search for answers would take him away for nearly a decade, including a spell working on an organic farm in Ibiza.
