YOUNG LOVE ON THE RUN
Worcestershire townsfolk in cahoots with couple on the lam who want to go legal

Back then this kind of story was quaint. Today it seems, this guy would have tattoos on his neck and be wanted for some heinous crime. My how times have changed.

14th September 1972

Wednesday (13-9-72) brought a happy ending for Vera Zeiner and Oswald Unterleichner, the 19-year-old students who ran away from home in Vienna, Austria, to get married in Scotland. On their way they had stopped at the Worcestershire town of Evesham, and had promptly been "adopted" by the townsfolk. Local people arranged the wedding for them, provided a hairdo for Vera, a wedding reception for twenty guests, and the loan of a dress. The wedding took place at Evesham Register Office on Wednesday, and after the reception the couple were leaving for a short honeymoon – also provided by the people of Evesham.

PICTURED: Yet another touch of friendship – a policeman holds up the Evesham traffic for Vera and Oswald after their wedding.
