THE SWINGING NUN
This sister sits with hippys at rock concerts

August 1975
It was the tale of two "pop" cities on Sunday (24-8-75). For Britain’s two big Bank Holiday festivals suffered widely differing fortunes. There was more flop than pop about the controversial Watchfield free festival. About 4,000 fans – instead of the expected 20,000 – scattered across the half-empty field, all alone and feeling blue. The Oxfordshire beauty spot village which feared a hippy invasion, was quiet – although things did liven up the following day. Meanwhile, they were singing the blues at Reading, Berkshire … but in a happier key. Nearly 30,000 fans turned up for the big jazz and blues festival, and many spent hours queueing to get in.

PICTURED: Her church is an open field, her congregation are into heavy rock rather than religion … but the swinging nun quietly moves among her flock. She was at Watchfield where the Bishop of Reading held a communion service. Nuns and other helpers handed out hymn sheets.
