FORMER MP STONEHOUSE STUCK IN THE BIG HOUSE—birthday boy behind bars

July 28 1975
Former Minister John Stonehouse was back in jail on his 50th birthday on Monday night (28-7-75) after failing in an impassioned pleas for freedom. For nearly three-quarters of an hour he had argued his case for bail from the dock at London’s Bow Street Magistrates Court. He attacked the House of Commons, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Scotland Yard, Attorney General Sam Silkin and the Press. He had several clashes with the chief Metropolitan magistrate, Sir Fran Milton – the man who signed the original warrant for his extradition from Australia. And finally, as he stalked out of the dock after being remanded in custody for another week, he turned to his daughter Jane, 26, and said: "It’s a put-up job. You can tell everyone that." Stonehouse, Member of Parliament for Walsall North, faces 21 charges alleging forgery, theft, conspiracy and fraud. He turned up in Australia after faking a suicide bid from a Miami beach in America.
